Reading for pleasure at Grangehurst.

Reading for Pleasure is really important to us at Grangehurst, we provide opportunities to build a rich reading curriculum in which children are taught to read and develop a love of reading for pleasure with a wide range of diverse books.

A Generation of Stories

Through the National Literacy Trust and BUPA, we were selected as a partner school to work with a local residential home. Funded through BUPA, we were one of 6 Primary schools in the UK who were selected to strengthen our children's world of understanding and of each other, through reading.

The programme continued to support our pledge to promote children's reading for pleasure, building their reading identity through events we held at a local residential home and here in school. The children and residents took part in storytelling workshops together, sharing books, which are then kept in the 'twinned' library on both sites.  We were thrilled to be involved in such a unique and impactful programme, that allowed our children to communicate and explore storytelling through the generations, connecting with those within our community.

Our School Library

We have recently updated our school library and now offer children the chance to borrow fantastic books from our selection of engaging non-fiction books. Children in KS2 visit the library every 3 weeks and choose a book to take home and enjoy. Children in EYFS and KS1, have an allocated library session. where teachers share books they enjoy and allow the children to explore the non-fiction books for themselves.

Love to Read books

In EYFS and KS1 the children choose a book each week to supplement their Monster Phonics book. These high-quality books have been chosen to support a love of reading and to enable our children to enjoy a book at home with their family.

World Book Day

As a school, we celebrate World Book Day each year, with various activities like dressing up as book characters, sharing favorite books, and engaging in reading-related events. We use the occasion to highlight the importance of reading for pleasure and to encourage children to explore new books and authors.
