Our topic for this half term is Pharaohs. We'll travel back to Ancient Egypt where we will explore, through the eyes of Howard Carter, the tombs of great Pharaohs. Year 5 will look at the artifacts found and the secrets they held. Using this as a starting point, we will then research further about Egyptian Gods and their beliefs and well as finding out about a typical Pharaoh and what they were expected to do and represent. Finally, we will draw our knowledge together to create the perfect burial for a Pharaoh and mummify them too!
In English this half term, our focus text is Quest of the Gods, which is a quest story and it links to the Ancient Egyptian Gods. Throughout this half term, Year 5 will be working on different description techniques to impact the reader such as; varied sentence openers, using relative clauses, choosing powerful adjectives and adverbs, as well as expanded noun phrases. Whilst this is a focus, we will continue to develop paragraphing skills, speech and dialogue, and using a range of punctuation. By the end of the half term, we will have written our very own story based around the structure of this text.
In addition to developing description in our story writing, our poetry focus towards the end of this half term, will allow us to explore poetic techniques and structures. Performing and writing poetry will help develop Year 5 as authors and see the impact our work has on our audience.
In Maths this half term, Year 5 will be focusing on multiplication using decimals, which will be applied to measures and money. Year 5 will be working on converting between kilometres, metres, centimetres and millimetres as well as other measures. Also we will be converting between pounds and pence in our problem solving which will involve applying our understanding of multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000.
Linking with multiplication, we will be looking at finding factors, prime numbers and square numbers as well as finding multiples, which requires our times tables knowledge.
Within geometry, we will be finding area and perimeters of squares and rectangles and starting to explore and investigate their algebraic formulas. Then Year 5 will revisit their understanding of shape properties to find missing angles and sides of 2D shapes.
